Transform a Bedroom with Peel + Stick Wallpaper

March 12, 2021DIY Projects, Our Home

A few months ago my fiancé and I moved into our first home together. We founds ourselves the perfect builder-grade home to start our family on the Chesapeake Bay. As we’ve been getting settled we’ve been starting to add our own personality to this new space. We’re finding fun ways to add personality without breaking the bank! So come along for this budget-friendly peel + Stick wallpaper rescue.

Peel + Stick Wallpaper — A dream come true?

You know that feeling when you move in to a new house and everything feels chaotic and nothing quite has a place yet and things are just kind of everywhere? Yea, that is what the before picture of our guest room screams to me. The first step we needed to take here was to just clean out the room. So thats where I started. Once the room was cleaned Alexa and I planned our design.

This is not our first go around with peel + stick wallpaper. While we were all quarantining at home in 2020 we decided to tackle a peel+stick project in our old apartment. Let’s just say, brand matters. Lots of tears of frustration were shed and the project almost completely abandoned (thankfully Alexa was able to talk me off that ledge!). So why was I getting ready to put myself through this again?

Because why not! I knew I wanted to do an accent wall with peel + stick wallpaper in our guest room, but it was all about finding the right one! There are so many great choices out there for peel + stick paper but we ended up going with Chasing Paper. I spent a few days reading reviews for a bunch of different brands and this one stood out to me as the best (taking into account reviews, install steps, and pattern availability). We decided to go with a Palm Springs themed guest room and found the perfect wallpaper to get things rolling! So we measured (always twice to make sure we didn’t make a mistake) and placed our order!

Jumping In

Installing peel + stick wallpaper is actually pretty straight forward. This is definitely a DIY beginner friendly project and can easily tackled as a solo project (but remember, many hands make light work). So here is what you need:

  • Wallpaper of our choice (we went with Palm Springs from Chasing Paper)
  • Laser Level or
  • 2ft Level
  • Utility Knife
  • Wallpaper squeegee* (optional)

Once you’ve got all your supplies make sure you read the directions that come with your paper. We had to start with a smooth, primed wall (using a semi-gloss or high gloss finish). Skipping this step may damage your walls when it comes time to remove the wallpaper.

Once you get the hang of hanging the panels it’s really straightforward! I’m obsessed with how it came out. We decided to add a natural edge wooden shelf (made with scrap wood from our dining room table!) and greenery to bring some natural textures to the space.

So is it worth it?

The biggest question remains. Is peel + stick wallpaper worth the hype? My answer—YES! It all comes down to the brand you go with. Read all the review and FAQ’s and make the decision that is best for you.
