If you’ve read our post on how we became street art hunters article, you know that our foray into muraling started in Washington, DC, so it’s only fitting that we chose this city for our first mural guide! I lived in Washington, D.C. for four years and Alexa currently lives there. It’s a city full of history, culture, and surprisingly, a ton of amazing murals that are definitely worth stopping and snapping a few photos with! So let’s get started.
Heart Wall | Union Market
This wall is located on the backside of Union Market located at 1309 5th St NE, Washington, DC 20002. There are usually people milling about so it’s pretty easy to grab someone to snap a quick picture for you. There is also plenty of space to be able to set up a tripod! The Market itself is an amazing photo opportunity with its iconic signage and amazing food that draws in lots of visitors every day. Make sure you pop inside for some good food and shopping and a few bonus murals within the market! There are also a fair number of shops surrounding the market including one of Alexa’s favorite bookstores, Politics & Prose!
Love Garage Doors | Blagden Alley
From Union Market head over to the Shaw neighborhood to check out this amazing set of vibrant rainbow painted garage doors, each representing a letter of the word LOVE. These doors are brought to you by artist Lisa Marie Thalhammer. The best way to find this hidden gem is to enter Blagden Alley into your GPS/Maps. These doors are so much fun to interact with in any kind of weather and stand out against their brick surroundings with their bright colors!
Space Is The Place | Blagden Alley
Blagden alley is not only home to the LOVE garage doors but also a variety of other murals that are definitely worth exploring these garage doors are a part of the larger DC Alley Museum located in Blagden Alley. This Mural was painted by Aniekan Udofia and is stunning in person. It is right next to La Colombe Coffee Roasters which is definitely a must for a little caffeine pick-me-up while you’re exploring the alley!
Ganesha | Shaw
Take a quick walk one block north of Blagden Alley to Shaw Yoga to see this Beautiful mural that adorns the front of this quaint little yoga studio. Ganesha is known as the Remover of Obstacles, Deity of Good Fortune, and Lord of Beginnings. Additionally, Ganesha is believed to place obstacles in our way so that we may learn and grow in just the way we need to progress. Find this beautiful wall at 1311 Naylor Ct NW, Washington, DC 20001. Definitely be sure to check out Shaw Yoga’s class schedule and pop in for a class and a chance to see this amazing mural by our friend Heidi at Desert2District!
The Wave Wall | Georgetown
After adventuring around Shaw. head on over to Georgetown for some food, shopping, and most importantly, the iconic Wave Wall! The Wave Wall is a mural of the Japanese print The Great Wave of Kanagawa, by Hokusai, by J. McConnell, and is discreetly located on the side of a house in Georgetown. It is easy to miss if you aren’t looking for it, so make sure to use this address for an easy find 3510 O St NW, Washington, DC.
Pink Flowers | Georgetown
While this isn’t a mural, this building located around the corner from the Wave Wall is too fun to pass up. Look for the bright pink building with green trim that is GreenWorks Flowers. The physical address for this shop is 3428 O St NW, Washington, DC 20007. This storefront will give you all those spring and summer feels with its bright color!
